Adapted by Mark Gatiss’, ‘A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story’ is an acclaimed re-telling of Charles Dickens’ winter classic, which offers a different, darkly irresistible take on the festive tale we all know and love.

“It’s a cold Christmas Eve and mean-spirited miser Ebenezer Scrooge has an unexpected visit from the spirit of his former business partner Jacob Marley. Bound in chains as punishment for a lifetime of greed, the unearthly figure explains it isn’t too late for Scrooge to change his miserly ways in order to escape the same fate, but first, he’ll have to face three more eerie encounters…”
Starring Matthew Cottle as Scrooge and Rufus Hound as Jacob Marley, this production features a small supporting cast, many of whom play in several roles throughout the story, bringing each character to life in sparkling, Dickensian spirit.

Featuring an eerie soundscape from Sound Designer, Ella Wahlström, and chilling illusions (John Bulleid) and lighting (Philip Gladwell), this production showcases spine-tingling special effects that will keep you on the edge of your seat, while the incredibly detailed and layered set design by Paul Wills, draws you into the delightfully frightening shadows of this Victorian setting. Expect flashing lights and jump scares (both on stage and flying over the audience) in this production that is as thrillingly scary as it is sharply ‘bah, humbug’ comical.
In the skilled hands of Gatiss, (The League of Gentle, Sherlock, Dracula, Doctor Who), ‘A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story’ is a spookily entertaining and festively fantastic twisted re-imagining of Dickens’ classic ghost story.
A Nottingham Playhouse Production in association with Eleanor Lloyd Productions and Eilene Davidson Productions, ‘A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story’ runs at The Rep, Birmingham until Sunday 5th January. All performances are captioned. BSL, Audio Described, and Relaxed Performances are also available, see website for full details.
