Defund Transphobes (Def Trans), a UK-wide grassroots activist community for trans+ justice, are organising dates across the country for trans outreach that aims to open conversations about trans rights, particularly with people who have less knowledge or experience of the community. The outreach will include two demos in Birmingham including a ‘topless demo’ in Victoria Square.

Topless demos have already been held in the UK including in Leeds, London, and Manchester. Their aim is to make trans people more visible and in doing so, to speak to bystanders about the issues trans people face with the government and Supreme Court’s recent attitude toward the community.

These outreach demos follow suit after a topless protest held outside Scottish parliament to condemn the UK Supreme Court’s ruling on the definition of ‘sex’, and the Scottish government’s response to it.

Birmingham outreach demos will be held on Saturday 7th June. From 11am-2pm there will be a topless demo in Victoria Square, followed by a further outreach event from 2.30pm-4.30pm outside Waterstones; the largest retailer of Harry Potter merchandise (outside dedicated themed shops). The book’s author, Rowling has been a loud anti-trans voice and reportedly funded the recent Supreme Court ruling in For Women Scotland v The Scottish Ministers.
