Review: Mamma Mia! at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre
★★★★
The hit musical Mamma Mia! returns to Wolverhampton for a two-week run. Set on a Greek island, this much-loved tale of love, friendship and family is told through the music of ABBA. Sophie begins a quest to discover who her father is ahead of her upcoming wedding, and in doing so, brings her mother face-to-face with three men from her romantic past.

The touring cast stars Hazel Baldwin as Sophie Sheridan, Ashleigh Jones as Alternate Donna Sheridan, Sarah Earnshaw as Tanya, Lauren Woolf as Rosie, Samuel Downey as Sky, Arvid Larsen as Harry Bright, Simon Victor as Bill Austin, and Richard Taylor Woods as Sam Carmichael. They are accompanied by Rachel Seirian, Lex Richardson, Ashton Sharp, Albert Green, Richard Vorster, and a large ensemble cast. Ashleigh Jones is not only tasked with stepping into the Alternate Donna role but also stepping into the shoes of Meryl Streep who played the iconic role in the film adaptation. This production is in safe hands though with Jones, whose vocals, acting and embodiment of Donna are in perfect keeping with the spirit of the show.
The simple, yet effective set design (Mark Thompson/ Jonathan Allen) whisks you off to the idyllic Greek island for a rom-com that is driven by chaos, comedy and lively choreography (Anthony Van Laast). Jam-packed with endlessly memorable tunes from ABBA, Mamma Mia is the upbeat and joyful musical that will leave you singing long after leaving the auditorium. While bright, sparkling costuming (Lucy Gaiger) makes for a visually spectacular show.
Balancing tender, emotional moments of connections with over-the-top humour — particularly from Sarah Earnshaw and Lauren Woolf as Donna’s friend’s Tanya and Rosie — the book by Catherine Johnson is funny and heartfelt. A pure celebration of friendship, family, and the youthful spirit (regardless of age), its clear why this musical remains a favourite. The ultimate escapism entertainment, Mamma Mia! Is a musical that has been enjoyed by over 70 million people around the world, and continues to charm audiences of all ages.
