Nottingham to hold protest following Anti-trans Supreme Court Ruling

Nottingham Against Transphobia together with Nottingham Pastel Project, and Trans Pride Nottingham are holding a protest following the Supreme Court judgment which was delivered on Wednesday 16th April 2025. The judgment ruled that the protected characteristic of ‘sex’ as outlined in the Equality Act refers to ‘biological’ women and does not include trans women. The judgment overrules Lady Haldane’s previous ruling in December 2022, which found that sex is not limited to biology.

The full picture of how this ruling will impact trans women (and indeed many women who do not fit the rigid, heteronormative, eurocentric ideology of a 'woman') are as yet unknown but the ruling has come as yet another attack on the trans community who make up less than 1% of the population.

Nadia Whittome, MP for Nottingham East wrote on social media following the ruling: “Attacking the rights of a marginalised group isn’t a win for feminism.

“Demanding that women be defined by our biology isn’t a win for feminism.

“The people driving this are not acting in the interests of women. They’re taking us all backwards and ushering in the far right.”

Trans people and allies are encouraged to join Nottingham Against Transphobia, Nottingham Pastel Project, and Trans Pride Nottingham in a protest against the “prejudice of the Supreme Court”, a ruling which, as their social media post explains, “will negatively impact all women”. The protest is due to be held on Sunday 20th April at 12pm at the Brian Clough Statue just off Old Market Square in the city.
