The National Trust Back to Backs in Birmingham will be celebrating pride weekend with a whole host of different activities. The historic heritage site – which is located opposite the Hippodrome theatre, at the gateway to the LGBTQ+ village – has celebrated LGBTQ+ lives and this year is no different, with an offering of great events and activities during Birmingham Pride weekend, which lands on the May Bank Holiday.

This year, visitors to the Back to Backs on Saturday 25th May can enjoy a craft market with stalls for LGBTQ+ creators, a pop-up stall from Proud Geek LGBTQ+ Bookshop in the National Trust second-hand Bookshop Court 15 Books, or take a final look around the two temporary exhibitions above the bookshop; Twiggy – The Drag Market and Gary Lindsay- Moore: It’s Not Unusual, A homage to Patti Bell. These activities are completely free, and no booking is necessary. Find out more online.
What’s more, they will also be teaming up with Back to Books for another year with a series of events called ‘Brum Buzzcut 2024: Birmingham’s Queer & LGBTQIA+ festival for words and conversations’. These events will be held in the courtyard of the Back to Backs on Sunday 26th May from 12pm-4pm.
From 12-1.30pm is Queer Ecology with Annie Higgins: “Annie Higgins joins us to talk about reclaiming and centering our relationship to the environment from a queer perspective as a powerful act of care and resistance,” explains the Buzzcut Festival outline, “Annie, along with Craftspace will lead a gentle-making activity and share how craft allows us to slow down our consumption, consider our material choices and directly impacts the shape of the world around us.”
From 2-2.45pm is Burning my Roti with Sharan Dhaliwal, "Sharan Dhaliwal - writer, founder of Burnt Roti magazine and Middlesex Pride - will join us to read from her celebrated book Burning My Roti: Breaking Barriers as a Queer Indian Woman. Part guide and part memoir, through her book Sharan speaks openly about her journey towards loving herself and offers advice, support and comfort to people that are encountering the same issues. After the reading Sharan will be in conversation with Alexia [Back to Books founder] and the audience.”
Last but not least, from 3-3.45pm is Speaking Queer with Samiir Saunders: “To close out Brum Buzzcut Festival 2024 we are joined by multimedia poet, musician, and performance artist Samiir Saunders. We invite you to hear works from their 2021 alternative hip-hop EP up all night, reading poetry, as well as some newer poems which touch on themes of queer intimacy, queer spirituality, and queer rage.”
Tickets for Brum Buzzcut cost £5 and they can be booked online where you can also read more about the events including access information.
