The LGBTQ+ community across Birmingham and the Midlands have been paying tribute following the news that Robert Mills, known to most as ‘Mrs Mills’ had sadly passed away over the weekend.

Photo of Mrs Mills, she wears a snake-skin style dress, jewellery, wig and make-up, she sits in a chair, is smiling, and has one hand on a red clutch bag. Her finger nails are painted red.

A legend of the local scene, Mrs Mills was a cabaret artist and drag performer who alongside David Dexter (Doris) performed in a popular drag duo ‘Bosom Buddies’ throughout the 80s and 90s. The pair received an Honorary ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award from Midlands Zone in 2020, celebrating their work in the city’s gay village.

Robert also performed solo, and as a hostess making a name for himself in Birmingham. During his career he worked in The Nightingale Club (at a previous location), Partners Bar, Missing, the Bullring Tavern, and the Village Inn, as the venue’s original bingo and cabaret host.

A post from The Village Inn (which has since moved locations) said: “We send our thoughts and condolences to his family, friends and anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.”

While Phil Oldershaw described Mrs Mills as: “A talented soul of her time.”
