Interview: Trying comedy with Bally Singh

Bally Singh, one of the internet's favourite 'meme-queens', is trying his first foray into stand-up comedy, and for a great charitable cause.

From Wolverhampton, Bally is a volunteer with Gaydio for a weekly show on Sundays at 4pm until 7pm. He also hosts a reality TV podcast called "Fancy Another Pod?”, and contributes as a freelance content creator for Birmingham Pride, working over the festival weekend and on campaigns throughout the year.

Bally Singh is in a radio studio, there is a microphone behind him. Bally is a Sikh man, he wears a black turban, blue t-shirt and black jacket.

This year, Bally Singh took a leap and signed up for an advertised comedy course. He explains: " It’s always been on my bucket list. I’ve always been told I’m funny, and I love making people laugh and escaping from the horrors of reality. I’ve wanted to do it for years and the opportunity came up, so I thought in the spirit of saying yes to more things, I’m going to go for it. I also want to show that people who look and sound like me can do things out of the norm and that we too can enter into spaces not necessarily designed for us.

He adds that, so far, "It's been good. It’s a bit of a slog getting to and from Birmingham, from Wolverhampton, during the mid-week after working all day, but I’m determined to learn and meet new people! It’s always fun learning from other people too, their ways of thinking or hearing why or how they got into it. Everyone's got different reasons for doing it and listening to people and watching how they engage is so fascinating.

Bally will be performing his first five-minute comedy show set in Birmingham on Sunday the 23rd of June, supporting the charity Women's Aid

He tells Midlands Rainbow: "I know survivors of domestic abuse, and know just how vital the work Women's Aid do is."

For those who are interested in seeing the stand-up show and supporting the charity, you can message Bally (@PutASinghOnIt) for a ticket link and further information.
