This year's Durham Miners’ Gala will feature a ‘Pride bloc’ during its banner march for the first time in the event’s history. The inclusion of a Pride section in the march, marks the working-class solidarity, resistance and unity under this year’s theme, ‘We Are Still Here’.

LGBTQ+ activists have a history of supporting the mining community, in particular during the strikes from 1984 to 1985. The major industrial action within the British coal industry and the support garnered from the group that called themselves, Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) was notably showcased in the hit film Pride, which was a fictionalised version of the real group and their actions.
Durham Pride will partner the Durham Miners' Association (DMA) to bring the 'bloc' to the march. The 'pride bloc' will parade through the city towards the racecourse with the rest of the banners and communities.
A spokesperson for the DMA said: "More than a generation after the last pit closed, the Gala stands as a living testament to the enduring strength of the Durham coalfield and its traditions.
"This year’s Gala is a proud celebration of inclusivity and solidarity.
"The Big Meeting will provide a space where all communities can come together in friendship and unity."
For the event, the DMA has also commissioned a limited-edition art print by British artist Bob and Roberta Smith to commemorate this year's theme. The artwork, titled 'We Are Still Here!', celebrates the resilience and unity of the Durham coalfield communities.
The 139th 'Big Meeting' for Durham Miners' Gala will take place on Saturday 12th July.
