Book Review: Grandad’s Christmas by Harry Woodgate
Part of the multi-award-winning ‘Grandad’s Camper’ series, Harry Woodgate’s latest children’s picture book, Grandad’s Christmas is the third instalment in the collection. Written and illustrated by Harry Woodgate, this warm story sees Milly and her parents spend Christmas at Grandad’s. The family are joined by a very special guest, Grandad's friend Viv. Viv’s home and the LGBTQ+ bookshop she runs have been flooded, leaving her without the money needed to fix them. Milly and Grandad though, have a plan to help Viv.
Featuring stunning festive illustrations this sweet children’s book is a celebration of queer family and friendship, of community both the LGBTQ+ community and wider connections, and a true exploration of the giving and kindness at the heart of the Christmas spirit.
The book features diverse representation that expands beyond that portrayed through the main characters. Diversity is also celebrated beautifully in the cast of characters that join the narrative in support of Viv, and throughout the vibrant illustrations. An overarching message of Woodgate’s work is that ‘Books are for everyone’, and this is showcased in both the story itself and in the representation that lets more young readers see themselves and their families in literature.
Although the book is predominately a warming festive read full of heart and Christmas cheer, Harry Woodgate does also touch on themes of loss (of homes, livelihoods, and of family). They tackle this with such gentleness, that Grandad’s Christmas also offers a story that can help children gain more understanding of the complexities of these feelings.
While it might be beneficial for children to have read the prior two books in Woodgate’s Grandad’s Camper series in order to learn more about the family background and dynamics, it is not completely necessary in reading this book. There are indeed references to the previous books, such as the Christmas ornaments used to decorate the tree, and photos adorning the walls of Grandad’s home, which can be fun for children to spot, but there are so many brilliant details filling the colourful pages that little ones will find fun in pointing out different details with each read and re-read of the book, no matter what. Even adults can enjoy many of these illustrative details, much of which give subtle nods to LGBTQ+ history, including patches and pin badges worn by Viv. Grandad’s Christmas can, therefore, either be read as the next instalment in the collection or as a stand-alone festive treat.
A celebratory story of family, community and the spirit of the festive season filled with exquisite illustrations, Harry Woodgate’s Grandad’s Christmas is a perfect December bedtime read!
