Birmingham Museums to celebrate Pride in STEM
Birmingham Museums are set to celebrate Pride in STEM Day with an event at the Think Tank. Featuring activities centred around LGBTQ+ people in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the event will be held on Saturday 14th November ahead of International Day of LGBTQIA+ People in STEM usually held annually on the 18th of the month.
In the write up for the event, Birmingham Museums explains: “LGBTQIA+ people have always been a part of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics - pushing boundaries, asking bold questions, and shaping the world we live in.
“With this event we want to shine a spotlight on the innovators, thinkers, and trailblazers from across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum who are transforming STEM from the lab to the launch pad.
“With a fabulous live science show, interactive activities, and more, join us as we celebrate the past, present, and future of LGBTQIA+ excellence in STEM. Representation matters now more than ever, let's stand together for a more inclusive, equitable future.
“This space is for everyone. Allies welcome. Curiosity encouraged.”
The celebration will include a variety of activities such as:
‘Fab-lab-ulous’: an interactive science show inspired by the stories of LGBTQIA+ scientists, with demonstrations for the whole family to enjoy. This show is presented by Sarah Cosgriff (she/they), an award-winning queer science communicator with a background in biology.
Skills Spotlight: activities and conversations across the galleries, where visitors can meet people who are passionate about STEM and heritage.
Story Time in the Den: A reading of 'Along Came a Different' by Tom McLaughlin; a story about shapes, colours, and learning to embrace and celebrate our differences.
Speaking about the upcoming event, Sarah Cosgriff told Midlands Rainbow: "It is an absolute delight to be involved with Pride in STEM Day again, and have the opportunity to share the stories of queer scientists and colourful demos through my science show 'Fab-lab-ulous!'
"I was keen about science from a young age, but I attended school during Section 28, a law which prevented teachers from talking about LGBTQIA+ people. This has been a big motivation for why I created 'Fab-lab-ulous!" and why events like this are important."
